Are You in the American Middle Class? Find Out With Our Income Calculator

By Jesse Bennett, Richard Fry and Rakesh

A new income calculator has been released by Pew Research Center to help Americans determine if they are in the middle class. The calculator, which is based on data from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, takes into account factors such as income, family size, and location to determine whether a person or family is considered middle class.

According to the Pew Research Center, the middle class is defined as those earning between two-thirds and twice the median American household income. In 2021, the median household income in the United States was $67,521. This means that a person earning between $45,014 and $135,042 would be considered middle class.

The income calculator is a valuable tool for Americans who want to understand their economic status. It can also be used to compare incomes across different geographic areas. For example, the calculator shows that the middle-class income range is higher in major cities than in rural areas. In New York City, for example, the middle-class income range is $62,000 to $186,000. In rural areas, the middle-class income range is $40,000 to $120,000.

The income calculator is a reminder that the middle class is not a static category. It is constantly changing, depending on factors such as the economy and the cost of living. As a result, it is important for Americans to regularly check their economic status to ensure that they are on track to achieve their financial goals.
